Getaways: What to Pack for a European Citybreak

Getaways: What to Pack for a European Citybreak

Is there anything better than a citybreak? Travel just a few hours and you can spend your weekend discovering a new place, eating and drinking local delicacies, absorbing the local culture and admiring the sights.

When you are taking a short trip, you may want to travel light, and if you have booked carry on luggage only, it’s vital that every item you bring is versatile and hard-working.

So, what do you pack? We’ve got the ultimate guide with just 16 classic items that can be interchanged to create 6 elegant and practical looks for you trip

Clothing:

1. A Linen Shirt

The Capri blouse is a true classic – the perfect breezy summer shirt. Wear it with jeans or shorts, throw it over a slip dress, or size up for an effortlessly elegant cover up for swimsuits. For a citybreak it can be worn a couple of times for daytime – layer over a long sleeve jersey for cooler climates or wear it worn open with a vest for a causal look that is also appropriate if you visit any churches or museums with AC.

2. Soft material trousers

Jeans are great, but we always prefer to travel in something softer and more breathable. What’s more, our Valetta linen trousers take up next to no space in your luggage when they are rolled up.

3. A versatile dress

A one-piece outfit is always a winner. Simply pop the Alexandria dress on with some sandals, trainers or ballet flats for an instant outfit. Style with hair up, gold jewellery and heels for a chic evening outfit, or elevate a simple jeans and tee shirt by wearing the dress without the belt as an elegant jacket.

4. Lightweight jumper/poncho

A lovely soft jumper in a neutral colour is a lifesaver on citybreaks. Use as a pillow for travel or wear if the airplane is chilly, layer over a simple t or linen shirt, and knot around your shoulders for a classic Italian look.

5. Jeans

Denim jeans are hard wearing for all-day sightseeing and can be dressed up easily with heels and jewellery for evening.

6. Smarter top

It’s a good idea to pack one slightly smarter top, with ¾ or long sleeves unless you’re visiting a very warm city. Pair with your jeans or softer material trousers for easy evening sophistication.

7. 2-3 jersey top

Basic tees come into their own on citybreaks, bring 2 or 3, ensuring that one is long sleeved, and we would recommend that one should be a black vest as this allows for many more outfit combinations than if they are all very similar.

8 & 9. Footwear:

You will probably be on your feet a lot, so a pair of comfortable trainers is essential. Pick a style that works with dresses as well as trousers as you’ll be wearing these the most. Pack a small pair of black heels to elevate your capsule wardrobe for the evenings.

10. Accessories:

Accessories can really help transition an outfit from day to evening – choose 2 statement jewellery pieces, such as a chunky chain necklace and gold hoop earrings, alongside a straw fedora hat (which you can wear while travelling to avoid it getting crushed) and oversized sunglasses. Choose a small cross body bag that you can tuck the strap into and wear as a clutch in the evenings. A colourful silk or lightweight scarf is a nice addition too.
